Shop around
Get quotes from a range of insurers, or get a broker to do it for you! it's the most common-sense way to reduce your costs.
Remove unnecessary additional drivers from policy
Additional drivers = Additional costs.
if you have drivers on the policy that never use the car, or only use it in an emergency,
weigh up if it would be cheaper just to pay for a taxi a couple of times a year than pay the extra costs.
If you don't use your car to commute, tell your insurer
You can make a huge saving on your premiums if you only use the vehicle for recreational purposes, however the insurers will assume you use it for work unless you tell them otherwise!
Ask what security measures will result in a discount
Some insurers give 5-10% discount if you have additional security measures. It's always worth checking out.
Ask for a discount if your annual mileage is low
The less time spent on the road, the less likely you are to crash! simple really. If you don't drive often, you may get a good discount.
Check if insurer offers discounts to those with additional driving certificates/qualifications
Pass Plus, for example, is a scheme run by the British School of Motoring which allows newly qualified drivers to improve their skills, including motorway driving. For 6 hours extra driving tuition, and no exam, you receive a Pass Plus certificate. Most insurers will cut premiums by the equivalent two years no claims discount.
Use a specialist insurer
If you drive an unusual car, or are in a certain age group, or use your car infrequently, there are a number of smaller specialist insurers who may be able to offer a better deal than many of the mainstream insurers.
